The Curious Case of the Costly Pillowcase

The pawnshop owner, a man who knew the value of everything and the price of nothing, eyed the silk pillowcase with suspicion. The fabric, smooth as a baby’s cheek, seemed to whisper of a life lived beyond the three golden balls hanging over his door.

“It’s for my fiancée,” the young man explained, his voice a nervous tremor. “She’s used to the finer things.”

“Fine things, they cost,” the pawnbroker grunted, his fingers tracing the edges of the pillowcase. “Silk, it’s a tricky business. Not like cotton, plain and simple.”

The young man, face flushed, stammered, “But the shop girl, she said something about… momme. Said it was the key to quality, like karats in gold.”

The pawnbroker, a man who dealt in facts, not fancy words, chuckled, a sound like coins rattling in a tin cup. “Momme,” he explained, leaning back in his chair, “it’s the weight of the silk, the measure of its substance.
