Finding the Perfect Fit: Selecting a Bed Skirt

The selection of a bed skirt is not a matter to be taken lightly. Just as a gentleman would not wear a suit jacket that is two sizes too large, so too must a bed skirt fit the bed frame precisely. A skirt that is too small will fail to conceal the area beneath the bed, while one that is too large will bunch unattractively.

The first step is to determine the dimensions of the bed. Using a tape measure, carefully note the width and length of the bed frame. Then, measure the distance from the top of the box spring to the floor. This measurement is known as the “drop.”

Armed with these three measurements, one can begin shopping for a bed skirt. Be sure to choose a skirt that corresponds to the size of the bed frame. A skirt that is intended for a full-size bed will not fit properly on a queen-size bed, for example.

When considering the drop, remember that the skirt should reach the floor without puddling excessively. If the skirt is too long, it can be hemmed, but a skirt that is too short will be difficult to adjust.
